Since the Ottoman Empire, cymbal-making has been closely linked to Istanbul, where generations of artisans have passed down the alchemy of transforming metal into sound. ZIL extends this transformation, shifting the cymbal from a percussive instrument into a floating personal sound space. Visitors are invited to stand alone beneath a cymbal, strike it once with a mallet and force of their choice, and fully experience its vibration and lingering resonance.

ZIL consists of a series of cymbals suspended at varying heights from climbing ropes, with mallets specially conceived for the installation with the artisans of the Büyük Valide Han. During the opening of the Mahalla Festival, ZIL will be activated with the public, evolving from an intimate sonic experience into a collective performance.

A Void in Between Zabo Chabiland - DMZ 2025

The performance “A Void in Between” focuses on a mathematical shape created by the simple gesture of pressing a malleable material between the thumbs and index fingers of both hands. The fingers act as a natural mold, and a tetrahedron emerges, intuitively and inevitably. This shape goes back to the very first creation of humanity, to the ball of clay found in ancient cultures. A gesture of unification, drawn of the collective unconscious.
